Malachi chapter 3
1 Behold, I will send my messenger,
and he shall prepare the way before me: and the LORD, whom ye seek, shall
suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight
in: behold, he shall come, saith the LORD of hosts.
2 But who may abide the day of his
coming? and who shall stand when he appeareth? for he is like a refiner's fire,
and like fullers' soap:
3 And he shall sit as a refiner and
purifier of silver: and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold
and silver, that they may offer unto the LORD an offering in righteousness.
4 Then shall the offering of Judah and
Jerusalem be pleasant unto the LORD, as in the days of old, and as in former
years.
5 And I will come near to you to
judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the
adulterers, and against false swearers, and against those that oppress the
hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and that turn aside the
stranger from his right, and fear not me, saith the LORD of hosts.
6 For I am the LORD, I change not;
therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.
7 Even from the days of your fathers
ye are gone away from mine ordinances, and have not kept them. Return unto me,
and I will return unto you, saith the LORD of hosts. But ye said, Wherein shall
we return?
8 Will a man rob God? Yet ye have
robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings.
9 Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye
have robbed me, even this whole nation.
10 Bring ye all the tithes into the
storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith,
saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour
you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.
11 And I will rebuke the devourer for
your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall
your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the LORD of hosts.
12 And all nations shall call you
blessed: for ye shall be a delightsome land, saith the LORD of hosts. Text was found at: The Bible Gateway Although this scripture does not correspond perhaps to the numbering in the new Orthodox Study Bible
the intent of the words are the same. For me, nektarios ippotis
(charlie knight), I have great financial needs and very few resources
to draw on in this world. I guess that is a blessing. I now must depend on God, as I should have from the beginning. For
me, the first 9 verses of this book tell a little background, and I see
myself in those verses, and breath a prayer of forgiveness to God. BUT
verse ten gives me a basic minimum to do and a PROMISE from GOD that if
I do this basic minimum HE WILL BLESS me, abundantly. What does God ask me to do. 1) To put aside the first 10 percent of what I get (that is the tithe)
2) To bring that tithe to God. I think I should do it when
I get it, the first time I come to Worship God after I get a valuable
good. 3) Go about my way having done what I was
asked to do and thinking of it no more. (That is my take on this from
other scriptures) BUT God says
"prove me" so I suppose you could say "God, OK, I did my part, now the
ball's in your court, prove this to me!" What does God say He will do (If I tithe or give more)
a) God will "Open the Windows of Heaven" (this gift
from God will come from a place I might not expect, it comes FROM GOD)
b) God will "Pour ...out a blessing", and you say that is
nice, a blessing. But God does not mean just words here,
He means a tangible proof that you are
blessed. That means so all will recognize God has blessed
you. I take that to mean that my
needs will be met when perhaps it seemed like they could not be met at
all. c) God will pour out such a blessing that "there shall not be room enough to receive it".
That means to me that God will bless me in
such a way that when all my containers are full I will still have much
to give to others, what JOY! |
So now you have my take on what God will do if I do the very basic least of giving back to Him one tenth of what I receive.
It
is true that the early church gave out of a "free will offering" basis
out of the thankfulness of their heart for the great gift of Salvation
that came to them through the sacrifice of Christ. But today a
"free will offering" is transplanted by many to mean you can give as
little as your like. I
suppose the old man I overheard talking one day is right. I think
I remember hims telling someone "Ah suppose if ya give God the
leftovers, they you shouldn't expect nuthin but leftovers coming back
to yah". I am so ashamed that my own creature comforts have come
before my gifts to God, and as a consequence I have often been hungry,
without money to pay of lodging, clothing, or anything else. I
am not telling you that you have to do as I have made a commitment to
do. What I am saying is that I, nektarios ippotis (charlie
knight) have made the decision to take God at his word, and expect the
Blessings He knows will be "good for me". I know the evilness of my
heart, so I have held on tight to the principle of tithing. I can
understand what 1/10th of something is. I can calculate how much that is. So that is what I will give. SOoooooo You say maybe you are not "ready" for that yet. But I want to show you how GOOD GOD IS. Therefore
I intend to try and keep a record of everything I spend and everything
I receive, so you can come back here often and see what God is doing in
my life as he PROVES that HIS WORDS are TRUE. Blessings
be showered upon you as you seek God's Will. PS It is entirely possible that the greatest BLESSING you might NEED is to find out how to live trusting GOD during abject poverty. I am not saying give one tenth of your income and get rich quick. I
am saying that God has PROMISED that if we give 1/10 of what He sees to
it that comes our way, from work, or a bonus check, or a gift from
someone, or whatever means (in the end it all comes from God anyway);
if we give then HE WILL pour out a blessing (something we need which
might be money, or clothes, or transportation or food or love or
respect or any number of things) that will be so large that we can not
contain it. After you have watched and seen what God is
doing in my life, then try it yourself, so I am not the only one
following this principle and being BLESSED !!! |
